GRL and LG Announce the First DisplayPort™ over USB-C™ Certified Display

Groundbreaking design supports 4K video, SuperSpeed USB, and power through a single connector

Granite River Labs (GRL), a global leader in engineering services and test solutions for high speed connectivity and LG Electronics, a global leader in consumer display technology, today announced that the LG 27UD88 Ultra HD IPS 4K monitor product family has achieved DisplayPort over USB-C  product certification – the world’s first 4K display to receive this distinction. Certification testing was performed at the GRL DisplayPort Authorized Test Center (ATC) in Taipei, Taiwan in accordance with product compliance standards established by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA®).

DisplayPort over USB-C enables 4K video, SuperSpeed USB, and up to 100W of power through a single, reversible USB Type-C connector, while offering the same performance and feature capability as a standard DisplayPort connection. In 2015, GRL certified the Dell New Venue 8 & 10 Pro tablets, the world’s first DisplayPort over USB-C certified products.

The LG Ultra HD IPS 4K 27-inch monitor (model 27UD88) is designed for creative professionals featuring the latest USB-C technology. Representing the next generation of computer connectivity, the monitor allows users to charge a laptop as fast as with a dedicated power cord and simultaneously transfer data at USB 3.0 speeds. The single cable gives users the ability to connect their laptops to an external monitor while also using the monitor as a power source, eliminating the need for more cables.

“This is an important milestone for LG,” said Jang lk-hwan, head of the Monitor and PC Division, LG Electronics. “By successfully completing VESA’s rigorous certification program, LG has demonstrated our commitment to extraordinary customer experiences using this revolutionary new technology in our 27UD88 Ultra HD IPS 4K displays.”

“As we continue to expand the capabilities of the DisplayPort standard and add benefits for the end user, we are simultaneously increasing the value of device certification for our members,” said Bill Lempesis, Executive Director of VESA. “We appreciate GRL’s technical leadership working with VESA to develop and successfully roll out the DisplayPort over USB-C compliance program, and we look forward to the support and promotion of more certified products.”

“We are thrilled to contribute to the success of LG’s groundbreaking new display,” said Quintin Anderson, co-Founder & COO of Granite River Labs.  “While offering extraordinary benefits in terms of functionality and user simplicity, USB Type-C presents significant design and validation challenges.  GRL has been proud to serve as an important technical resource for early adopters.”
