Apple© released the candidate versions (RCs) of the latest iOS 17.2 update to developers for testing purposes on 5th December, 2023, with public release versions distributed a week later on Tuesday, 12th December, 2023.
Qi2: A Game-Changer for iPhone 13 and 14 users
The latest iPhone operating system extends Qi2 wireless charging to iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Pro models, all of which could previously only be charged by MagSafe-certified chargers priced at a premium. With Qi2 support, iPhone users can now enjoy the faster 15W charging speed and greater compatibility with a wider range of chargers on the market without upgrading to iPhone 15.
Wireless charging bug within iPhone 15 fixed
Speaking of iPhone 15, iOS 17.2 also addresses a bug that prevented in-vehicle wireless charging pads from working with some iPhones. Specifically, these complaints came from iPhone 15 users who attempted to conduct wireless charging within Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick vehicles, where charging pads would not charge at all or charge sporadically.
Qi2 wireless charging for iPhone 12 and earlier models?
iPhone 12 models remain compatible with MagSafe, although the lack of Qi2-compatibility means that owners of these phones will not benefit from the inclusion of Qi2 wireless charging in iOS 17.2
Latest developments in the Qi2 wireless charging ecosystem
Introduced at CES 2023, Qi2 facilitates MagSafe-like fast wireless charging between compatible devices and chargers through a Magnetic Power Profile that optimizes device orientation while also using an authentication process that minimizes heat generation for device and user safety.
While the current output is capped at 15W, future iterations are expected to push charging levels significantly higher, according to the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). Popular wireless charging brands such as Anker are already supporting a huge wave of Qi2-compatible accessories, with many more gearing up for release in the run-up to CES 2024.
