National Electrical Code NFPA 70 requires mandatory safety approval for certain categories of electrical products sold in the United States and Canada. Before any product can be sold or imported to the USA or Canada, it must have an NRTL mark issued according to relevant US and Canadian standards. FCC and IC requirements apply to all equipment liable to cause radio frequency interference.

Requirements: Safety, Mandatory
NRTL Certification: 38 different types of products or equipment to be approved by NRTLs, including:
- Electrical products and equipment
- Fire detecting and extinguishing equipment
- Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) utilization equipment
- Equipment for use in hazardous locations
Factory Inspection: initial and follow up inspections are required and need to be performed by the inspection body of the NRTL who is issuing the NRTL approval
