GRL and MStar Announce the First DisplayPort 1.4 Certified Sink Design

MStar MST9UXXV4 achieves DisplayPort 1.4 certification at GRL with new higher-speed HBR3 link rate enabling next generation high-end displays

MStar Semiconductor, Inc. (MStar), a world leader in ASICs for consumer electronic products and display applications, announced today that the MStarMST9UXXV4 DisplayPort Receiver Digital Controller and PHY has become the first Sink device to achieve official certification under the DisplayPort HBR3 Early Product Certification Program. Granite River Labs (GRL), a global leader in engineering services and test solutions for connectivity and a Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA®) DisplayPort Authorized Test Center (ATC), performed all testing at their Taipei, Taiwan facility.

The MStar MST9UXXV4 supports High Bit Rate 3 (HBR3), the highest data link rate supported by the DisplayPort standard version 1.4 published in March 2016. DisplayPort interfaces with HBR3 can drive 8K video resolution using a single connection, as well as multiple 4K and HDR displays. VESA’s DisplayPort version 1.4 standard is a comprehensive extension to the DisplayPort platform, with higher maximum link bandwidth, built-in video transport compression and other key features that significantly enhance display performance. HBR3 supports a total bandwidth of 32.4 Gbps when using all four lanes in the DisplayPort or USB Type-C connector, at 8.1 Gbps per lane. Key applications supported by HBR3 include high-performance gaming, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), and television broadcasting.

“We are very proud to be the first DisplayPort Adopter to achieve DisplayPort 1.4 certification for a sink device,” said Kevin Tseng, general manager of MStar’s monitor and display business unit. “With the features that DisplayPort 1.4 brings to the table, we are able to develop advanced, robust technologies that system manufacturers can leverage to revolutionize the consumer’s highest quality visual experience.”

“VESA requires very stringent testing before certification can be granted, making MStar’s achievement even more impressive,” said Mike Engbretson, chief technical engineer of Granite River Labs. “We are proud to play a critical role in VESA’s efforts to ensure interoperability and deliver industry leading products to market.”

“VESA’s goal has always been to enable the electronics industry to deliver a superior visual experience,” said Bill Lempesis, executive director of VESA. “With both sink and source devices having now achieved DisplayPort 1.4 certification, we are seeing this goal come to fruition. Now that 8K and VR content is starting to become available, a robust HBR3 ecosystem is a necessity. We appreciate GRL’s leadership in supporting the HBR3 Early Product Certification Program, and congratulate MStar on this important milestone.”
