Manufacturers and OEMs can easily test Receiver TER and Frequency Variation to the USB4® Version 2.0 Gen 4 standard using Anritsu MP1900A BERT and Keysight oscilloscopes.

Granite River Labs (GRL), a global leader in engineering services, test automation solutions for digital connectivity and charging technologies, and professional market access services, has officially launched a receiver calibration and compliance test automation solution (GRL-USB4-V2-RXA) for the USB4® Version 2.0 standard. Built on PHY architecture based on PAM-3 signal encoding over existing 40Gbps Type-C passive cables and newly defined 80Gbps Type-C active cables, USB4® v2 doubles the performance capabilities of wired connections to external drives, and 4K and 6K displays. In addition, USB4® v2 can deliver up to 120Gbps in one direction and 40Gbps in the other when configured asymmetrically.

Developed by leading Thunderbolt and USB testing experts, GRL-USB4-V2-RXA automates selected oscilloscopes for BERT calibration while channeling stress signals to account for worst-case scenarios. Its intuitive user interface enables complex USB4® Gen 4 testing to be conducted with significantly less equipment and time.

In addition, GRL-USB4-V2-RXA supports testing for USB4® Gen 4 receiver TER compliance without FEC and frequency variation for Case 1 and Case 2. Through design validation, the GRL-USB4-V2-RXA can minimize error rates and system performance errors, thereby mitigating channel loss issues that USB4® v2 manufacturers often grapple with.

About USB4® Version 2.0 Gen 4

Released in October 2022 by the USB® Implementers Forum, USB4® Version 2.0 doubles the performance capabilities of USB wired connections to external drives, 4K and 6K displays. Its PHY architecture based on PAM-3 signal encoding over existing 40Gbps USB Type-C passive cables and newly defined 80Gbps USB Type-C active cables allows USB4® V2.0 to deliver up to 120Gbps in one direction and 40Gbps in the other direction when configured asymmetrically.

Complementing the GRL-USB4V2RL-AN and GRL-USB4V2RL-KS automation software is the GRL-USB4V2-Controller hardware supporting USB4® V2.0 Gen 4 and V1.0 Gen 3 & Gen 2 to directly control hosts and devices under test by executing microcontroller test scripts.

In addition, GRL has also introduced the following USB4® V2 automated testing solutions: GRL-USB4-V2-TX for transmitter compliance and GRL-USB4-V2-RXA for receiver compliance. With a satisfactory level of interoperability testing, these test suites promise to ensure the performance of 80Gbps hosts and devices within most USB4® Gen 4 environments.

Technical Director of GRL Taiwan, Sandy Chang, said, “We look forward to unlocking new technological possibilities and applications by working with manufacturers and OEMs to achieve their design visions under USB4® V2. It is our honor to work on leading innovations in the market and we will continue in our endeavors to bring our customers robust technical support.”
